Moon Phases Calendar: Next Full Moon & New Moon

The moon phases calendar: every new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter on the timelines of your cities for the next year, each a bar from its exact minute to the start of the next phase. A phase begins at one instant for the whole Earth, so the calendar is right wherever you are; the timeline turns it into the local time and date of each city.

Full moons carry their traditional names, from the Wolf Moon in January to the Cold Moon in December, with the Harvest Moon nearest the September equinox and the Hunter's Moon after it. A full moon closer than 360,000 km is marked as a supermoon.

Select a phase for its start and the next phase in UTC, how much of the Moon is lit and, for a full moon, its name and distance from the Earth. Each of the four phases has its own colour on the timeline.

The phases are computed from the positions of the Sun and the Moon, so the calendar never goes out of date.

Questions and answers

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon is on the timeline of each of your cities: its bar starts at the local time of the full moon and runs to the last quarter. The next event button jumps to it. Full moons come every 29.5 days, so most months have one and a few have two.

What time is the full moon tonight?

The full moon is a single instant - when the Moon is opposite the Sun - and its bar starts at that minute. The Moon looks full for about a day either side, so tonight's moon is full to the eye if the instant falls within a day.

Why is the full moon on a different date in another country?

The phase happens at the same moment everywhere on Earth, but the local date depends on the time zone. A full moon just after midnight in London is still the evening before in New York - put both cities on the timeline to see it.

What is this month's full moon called?

Each full moon carries its traditional North American name - Wolf Moon in January, Snow Moon in February, Cold Moon in December and so on. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the September equinox, and the Hunter's Moon is the one after it.

What is a supermoon?

A full moon that happens when the Moon is close to the Earth. This calendar calls a full moon a supermoon when it is closer than 360,000 km; it then looks up to about 14% larger than the smallest full moon of the year. Select a full moon for its distance.
